Join thousands of libraries around the world for the Big Library Read, global eBook reading club. Beginning on May 15th, patrons can download Michael Malone’s novel The Four Corners of the Sky in OverDrive Read, Kindle, EPUB, and PDF formats via the library’s OverDrive eBook catalog.  There will be unlimited access to the eBook from May 15th through June 1st.  No holds or waiting lists!  You will need your resident Elkhart Public Library card and an Internet connected electronic device such as a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

The Four Corners of the Sky is described as a novel of love, family, and forgiveness.  Annie is a Navy pilot now but once she was a motherless child, abandoned by her con artist father to live with family she’d never met.   When her father’s dying wish is the return of a precious gift in exchange for her mother’s name, Annie embarks on an unforgettable adventure.

Big Library Read is a pilot program in which libraries worldwide offer a single eBook to their patrons. In addition to creating a global “library book club,” Big Library Read is designed to demonstrate the positive exposure and sales influence library eBook catalogs provide to authors and publishers. It will spotlight one title for a set time period for library patrons around the world to read simultaneously. The program is sponsored by OverDrive, a global distributor of eBooks and audiobooks, with initial support and participation from Sourcebooks, Inc., a leading US independent publisher.

The lovely Wellfield Botanic Gardens will, once again this year, be the setting for Stories in the Garden. Elkhart Public Library staff will share stories and songs. Gather in the English Cottage Garden on the third Tuesday of each month, May through October, from 6:00-6:30 p.m. Wellfield admission is free on Tuesdays. This year there will be a tented area in case of rain. Bring a cozy blanket to sit on and enjoy interactive family time amid beautiful surroundings. You could even make it a regular family outing, and explore the Gardens before or after the program.

DIG INTO READING this summer at the Elkhart Public Library!

For one day in early May, lemonade stands will pop up all around Elkhart.  Saturday, May 4 is Elkhart’s second annual Lemonade Day.  In her eTruth blog post It’s almost time for Lemonade Day Elkhart, Marlys Weaver-Stoesz reports that about 500 Elkhart students participated last year and that the organizers are hoping for 1000 this year.

Lemonade Day is held in communities across the country to help children learn how to start their own businesses. In the process they also learn about handling money and other valuable life skills.

We have made a Lemonade Day book list especially for kids who want to know more about starting a business. Included are “getting started” guides for young entrepreneurs,  matching interests with opportunities, handling money and more. All of the titles are available from the Elkhart Public Library.

The backpacks include the materials and information needed to set up a lemonade stand. Registration forms are also enclosed for those who have not already registered online.
