Babies and the Library

Allison : September 28, 2012 10:38 am : Elkhart Public Library, Kids

It is never too early to start preparing your young child to learn how to read. Before your child even starts learning the alphabet, there is a lot you can do to make sure they are ready to read! From almost the moment they are born, babies start learning important pre-reading skills and there are many fun ways parents and caregivers can help them along.

Reading to your child can begin at any age. They will love hearing the sound of your voice and looking at the bright illustrations of a board book, which also have sturdy pages just right for little hands. Singing is another way parents can prepare children to read. Singing tunes children into the rythmn of language and slows it down so they can pick up on the smaller sounds in words.

Many Elkhart Public Library locations offer a lapsit program for infants 0-24 months and parents or caregivers. This program provides lots of singing and reading that will help your baby learn language and reading skills later in life. Come to a lapsit program and start your baby’s journey towards reading today!

Main: Wednesdays, October 3, November 7, and December 5 at 10:00 am.

Cleveland: Mondays, October 8 and November 5 at 10:00 am.

Pierre Moran: Mondays, now through December 3 at 10:00 am.

Beverly Lewis: Writing is Who I Am

mrobinso : September 17, 2012 12:12 pm : Elkhart Public Library

Nearly 100 people turned out Friday, to meet author Beverly Lewis. Ms. Lewis spoke about her writing  (“It is not what I do; it is who I am.”) and  her new book, The Bridesmaid, answered questions– many about Amish culture, and signed copies of her books for appreciative fans.
