This week, September 30 – October 6, 2012, marks the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read. To commemorate this milestone, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has coordinated a
50 State Salute to Banned Books Week, which included a Banned Books Virtual Read-out. People all over the country—and around the world—were encouraged to upload videos of themselves reading or discussing their favorite banned or challenged books on the special Banned Books Virtual Read-out Channel on YouTube.
Each year, the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from libraries shelves and from classrooms, and compiles a list of banned or frequently challenged books.
