The local history database indexes items of historical significance to Elkhart County and City. Coverage is on topics, persons, businesses, and events that have current and historical significance to the Elkhart area.

Most of the items in the database index topics or articles that have appeared in the Elkhart Truth newspaper from 2001 to the present. There is currently only partial coverage of Elkhart Truth articles earlier than 2001.

The local history index originally existed in print form in card files located in the local history/genealogy area. Information on these cards has been entered into the Local History Database. Other types of Elkhart-related resource materials are also indexed.

Written Requests

Elkhart Public staff will answer requests on a first-come, first-served, as-time-permits basis. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check to cover any requested photocopies to:

Email inquiries can be sent to queries@elkhart.lib.in.us. The Elkhart Public Library currently does not email obituaries. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check to cover any requested photocopies to the address listed above.

Photocopy Charges

Photocopies cost fifteen cents per page.
