EPL SliderForget your library card? Now we can scan it from your smartphone! Just download an app and photograph your card. Voila! You have your Library barcode wherever you have your phone.

There are a number of “loyalty” or “rewards” card apps available.  Key Ring is one of them. It is well-reviewed, user-friendly and available for most smartphones. Go to www.keyringapp.com for more information, and to download it to your Android or iPhone. Key Ring is also available for Blackberry and Windows phones:

Key Ring – Blackberry
Key Ring – Windows

For other “loyalty” or “rewards” card apps, check Google Play (Android), the App Store (iPhone), Blackberry App World or the Windows App Store. These are generally accessible directly from your phone.

Once your barcode is on your phone, you can use it just as you would your Elkhart Public Library card.

Ed2go is now Learn4Life: Limited Course Enrollments through November 2013

Administrator : June 18, 2013 8:53 am : Elkhart Public Library, Teens

UPDATE: Learn4Life is now Gale Courses!
Access and content are still the same.
The links this post will take you to the site.

Learn4Life graphic

When ed2go, a popular online learning course service, recently began offering subscription access to public libraries through the publisher Gale Cengage Learning, we knew it would be a unique addition to our online resources.  Since our ed2go subscription began in January of this year, there have been 67 course enrollments in the areas of business, teaching and education, healthcare, writing and publishing, computer applications, and college readiness. Other public libraries have experienced increased demand for these free classes, so much so that the publisher has implemented several changes to the service:

  • Ed2Go is now called Learn4Life.
  • From June 2013 through November 2013, each Elkhart Public Library patron will be limited to taking a total of five courses.  Any courses started before June will not count against this total.  This is a cost saving measure instituted by Gale Cengage Learning.
  • Use your Elkhart Public Library card barcode/number to enroll in a free course (no need to request a passcode).
  • You must access the first two lessons within the first two weeks, or you will be dropped from the course. (A dropped course will not count toward your five course limit.)

Learn4Life continues to offer the same selection of FREE, highly interactive courses as ed2go. Take each course entirely over the Internet at your convenience, from work, home, school, or anywhere else… 24/7, 365 days a year!  All courses are led by expert instructors, many of whom are nationally known authors. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin monthly.

Courses are FREE to resident Elkhart Public Library card holders.

To take advantage of this exciting learning opportunity:

  • Go to myepl.org/info247,
  • Find “Online Learning Courses” on the list,
  • Click on the plus sign and choose “Learn4Life.”
  • Enroll in a course following these simple steps:

1. Click “Enroll Now” next to the course of your choice.  You can find courses by browsing through the categories on the left of your screen or by using the search bar at the top.

2. Select your course start date and click “Continue.”

3. If you have never taken a Learn4Life (or Ed2Go) course: enter your email address in the New Student area, and click “Create Account.”  Complete the Account and Student Information page and then click “Continue to Payment Options.”

If you are a returning student: enter your account email and password and then click “Sign In.”

4. Enter your library barcode and click “Use Library Card”.

5. Congratulations! You are now enrolled and will receive a confirmation email at the address you provided.

A Record of Completion is available for printing once you have successfully completed the final exam of your course.

Others have already completed courses such as Microsoft Excel, Fundamentals of Supervision and Management, and Start Your Own Edible Garden.  Leave a response in the section below to let us know which courses you’ll be taking!

Children & Teens: New Ways to Dig into Reading

Administrator : May 21, 2013 2:42 pm : Elkhart Public Library, Kids, Teens

This year’s Summer Reading Program is all new and exciting! Children will track minutes instead of titles, and teens get to explore different reading genres.

Dig into Reading

Dig into Reading (children, ages 0-12)

If you have taken part in our Summer Reading Program before, be ready for a change. This year all you have to do is read at least fifteen minutes a day for four days and do two other activities to earn a prize. The activities are fun and simple, like checking out a book at the Library or drawing a picture about summer. When you sign up, you will receive a reading log to keep track of how many minutes you read. The best part of the new program is that you can earn a prize every week! For every reading log you turn in, you win a small prize. When you fill up three logs, you win a book. Complete all eight reading logs and you get another book.

There will also be a grand prize drawing. For each reading log you turn in, you get an entry into the drawing. We have five bicycles to give away to five lucky readers!

Beneath the Surface

Beneath the Surface (teens, ages 12 and up)

Teens, when you sign up, you get a Bingo Card to fill in. There are different genres of books to read and various reading and library-related activities on the card.  For each row you fill, you earn a prize. For the teen grand prize drawing we will give away a Kindle Fire and a Nook Color.

Summer Reading runs from June 1 to July 27. Prizes can be claimed through August 3.

“Underground” Activities

As always, we have plenty of theme-related summer fun lined up.

Kids can look forward to a visit from Silly Safaris and their wild animal show, a Pirates and Treasure program, Digging for Dinosaur Bones and more, including our traditional end-of-summer Ice Cream Social!

Special Guests Bring History to Life

Administrator : April 1, 2013 11:08 am : Elkhart Public Library, Kids, Teens

Killer Angels book coverOne Book, One Michiana, created by the St. Joseph County Public Library, is an annual event during which the entire Michiana community reads the same book. Themed events and activities are planned by participating libraries and community organizations. This year’s book is THE KILLER ANGELS, Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the four days before and during the Battle of Gettysburg, as seen through the eyes of four generals and their men.

You can find THE KILLER ANGELS at local bookstores and libraries. EPL has multiple copies. Check our online Public Access Catalog for availability.

One Book, One Michiana 2013 runs from April 1 – May 11.  We have an exciting array of program and events for you, including visits from a historian, Union and Confederate soldiers, a president and a first lady.

  Special Guests

Civil War (Union) Soldier

The Civil War comes alive as a uniformed Union soldier visits each of our locations. He will guide you through the trials and tribulations of the Civil War, on the battlefield and on the home front in Elkhart County. The program will presented by Frank Fisher from the Elkhart County Historical Museum.

April 9, 6:30 p.m.  — Pierre Moran Branch
April 11, 6:30 p.m. — Cleveland Branch

April 18, 6:30 p.m. — Dunlap Branch
Adults and children are welcome.

Life of the Civil War Soldier: a Confederate Perspective

Duane Clark of the Elkhart Police Department brings 14 years experience of Civil War reenactment to life.  Told from the perspective of a Confederate soldier, he brings his insights into the peril of the average soldier on either side of the war.

April 30 — Dunlap Branch, 6:30 p.m.
May 7 — Cleveland Branch, 6:30 p.m.

Historian’s View

April 8, 6:30 p.m. at the Osolo Branch:
Don Parker will present an overview of the book, KILLER ANGELS. Mr. Parker has deep ancestral ties to the war and has been researching it for 20 years. He will share what he has learned of events leading up to the war, major battles, and the impact the war had on the American people. Ages High School and up.  Though this is a combined gathering of  the Osolo Branch 2nd Monday Night Page Turners and the Main Library Book Club, everyone (high school age and older) is invited to attend.

President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln

April 22, 5:30 p.m.at the Main Library
Have you ever wondered what it is like to grow up in a cabin? What makes Mrs. Lincoln’s dress stand out? Come and find out when President & Mrs. Lincoln come for a visit, sponsored by the Friends of the Elkhart Public Library.  The Lincolns cordially request the presence of both children and adults.
