Black History Month

Administrator : January 30, 2015 2:14 pm : Elkhart Public Library

7917134140_64e7cf42ff_zIn 1976, President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month, a time for the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” It is also known as National African-American History month.

Dunlap “Black History Read”

The Dunlap Branch will offer children and teens a small prize for every Black History book read in February — fiction or nonfiction. Each book you read will also earn an entry for the grand prize drawing to be held the first week in March. (It counts if a parent or caregiver reads a book to you.)

Book Displays

For your convenience, several of our locations have Black History materials on display, or in a special area for easy access.

For a fascinating browsing experience, explore Elkhart Public Library Black History Links, a comprehensive collection of links to history, biographies, images, art, and a wide range of African American accomplishments and contributions to American culture.
